paranormal goodness

I just found out that the Gena Showalter book I put in my interesting upcoming books is part of a multi-author series. There are three more books set in that world, from authors Jill Monroe, Jessica Andersen and Nalini Singh!!
WOOT!

There's more info on the series here:
Royal House of Shadows

Boogers won't let me cut and paste the blurb in, and I'm too tired to type it out, but it looks interesting!

Books on the incoming radar

Where Demons Fear to Tread by Stephanie Chong (30/08)
blurb:
Where angels fall from grace and demons fall…in love.
"Welcome to DEVIL's Paradise."
The arch demon’s voice was low and deep. His fingers caressed her through the fabric of her dress. “Your soul—or his, Serena. Choose.”
Fledging guardian angel and yoga teacher Serena St. Clair dares to enter Devil’s Paradise nightclub on a mission—to retrieve the wayward Hollywood “It Boy” she’s assigned to protect. But she’s ambushed by the club’s owner, arch demon Julian Ascher. The most powerful demonic entity in Los Angeles, Julian is handsome as sin, a master of temptation who loves nothing more than corrupting pleasure-seeking humans. He won’t release the lost soul Serena is supposed to guard. Unless she accepts his dangerous wager.…
After the disastrous way his human life ended, Julian vowed that no woman would get the better of him again.
Yet this sexy-sweet angel, smelling of fresh ocean air and happiness, triggers centuries-old feelings. Now, their high-stakes game of seduction, where angels fall from grace and where demons fear to tread, will lead them either to an eternity in hell…or a deliciously hot heaven.

A Touch of Crimson by Sylvia Day (4/10)
blurb:
First in a new series! Can a love that transcends death survive a war between angels, vampires, and lycans?
Adrian Mitchell is an angel of immense power and insatiable desire. Leading an elite Special Ops unit of the Seraphim, his task is to punish the Fallen--angels who have become vampires--and command a restless pack of indentured lycans.
But Adrian has suffered his own punishment for becoming involved with mortals--losing the woman he loves again and again. Now, after nearly two hundred years, he has found her--Shadoe, her soul once more inhabiting a new body with no memory of him. Only this time he won't let her go.
With no memory of her past as Shadoe, Lindsay Gibson only knows she can't help being fiercely attracted to the smoldering, seductive male who crosses her path. Swept into a dangerous world of tumultuous passion and preternatural conflict, Lindsay is soon caught in the middle between her angel lover, her vampire father, and a full-blown lycan revolt. There's more at stake than her love and her life--this time she could lose her very soul...

Catch Me by Lorelie Brown (18/07)
blurb:
Arizona Territory, 1882
Maggie Bullock's father needed expensive medical care and if that meant stealing from their friendly swindling banker, so be it. Once her father was on the path to recovery she would face the consequences. The whole thing was surprisingly easy until she's kidnapped by bounty hunter Dean Colter.
Colter is tired of tracking down worthless scum. He's afraid he'll lose his last scrap of humanity and become a stone-cold killer, just like the men he brings to justice. He jumps at the chance to become sheriff of Fresh Springs, Arizona. The one condition-capture Maggie.
He figured it'd be easy. Until beautiful, loyal Maggie breaks through defenses he'd thought cemented. His feelings for her run the range from fury to confusion to love, but if he doesn't bring her in someone else will. Can there be a future between a sheriff and a fugitive?

Good Girls Don't by Victoria Dahl (30/8)

blurb:
With her sun-kissed hair and sparkling green eyes, Tessa Donovan looks more like the girl next door than
a businesswoman—or a heartbreaker. Which may explain why Detective Luke Asher barely notices her when he
arrives to investigate a break-in at her family’s brewery. He’s got his own problems—starting with the fact that
his partner, Simone, is pregnant and everyone thinks he’s the father.
Tessa has her hands full, too. Her brother’s playboy ways may be threatening the business, and the tension could tear her tight-knit family apart. In fact, the only thing that could unite the Donovan boys is seeing a man come after their baby” sister. Especially a man like Luke Asher. But Tessa sees past the rumors to the man beneath. He’s not who people think he is—and neither is she.

Lord of the Vampires by Gena Showalter (30/8)

blurb:
Royal House of Shadows: Book I
Once upon a time…the Blood Sorcerer vanquished the kingdom of Elden. To save their children, the queen scattered them to safety and the king filled them with vengeance. Only a magical timepiece connects the four
royal heirs…and time is running out…
Nicolai the Vampire was renowned for his virility, but in a twist of fate “The Dark Seducer” had become a sex slave in the kingdom of Delfina—stripped of his precious timepiece and his memory. All that remained was a primal need for freedom, revenge—and the only woman who could help him.
In her dreams, a wanton vampire called to Jane Parker, drawing her to his dark sexuality and his magical realm.
But for a human, all was not a fairy tale in Delfina. Jane was the key to Nicolai’s memory…but exploiting her
meant dooming the only mortal he craved.

Vipers Kiss by Shannon Curtis (25/7)

(Shannon is an Australian author who was very interesting at ARRA conference this year btw)
blurb:
Librarian Maggie Kincaid yearns for excitement-but being accused of espionage is not what she had in mind. Wanted by the police, the FBI and the criminal element, Maggie goes on the run-and runs straight into sexy Luke Fletcher. Unfortunately, when Luke pulls out the handcuffs, it's not because he has something kinky in mind...
Security expert Luke is intent on seeing the murderous spy known only as Viper brought to justice. The un-spy-like behavior of his fugitive makes him suspect he's apprehended the wrong woman. Just as they give in to lust, new evidence convinces Luke that Maggie's not as innocent as she claims to be.
Devastated by Luke's inability to trust her, Maggie runs again. She's determined to clear her name, and if that means tracking down a notorious spy even Interpol can't seem to locate, then that's exactly what she'll do...

I think I mentioned this next one in my current reads a post or two ago, but I must admit I am still excited about this book, and exploring what else Angry Robots has to offer.
Roil by Trent Jamieson (30/8)
blurb:
Shale is in trouble - the creature-infested darkness know as theRoil is expanding, consuming the land and swallowing up whole cities.
Where once there were 12 metropolises, now only 4 remain, and their borders are being threatened by the growing cloud of darkness. The only way to hold back the darkness and the horrific creatures that inhabit it are the cities huge ice canons. But one by one the defences are failing. And the Roil continues to grow.
With the land in chaos, it's up to a drug addict, an old man and a woman intent on revenge to try to save their city - and the world.
FILEUNDER: Steampunk [ Ice Canons | Clockwork Tech | Holding back the Tide |Unreliable Heroes ]

And last but definitely not least is the Women of the Mean Streets anthology from Bold Stroke. (16/8)

June Reading

I have been in a bit of a funk this month, with minimal reading done, but a lot of grumpiness. :(

Love in the Time of Dragons by Katie MacAlister made me laugh, and entertained me, but the second one, which will be listed in the next week, not so much. There were still the funny moments in Unbearable Lightness, but not enough other stuff happening... well not at a reasonable pace anyways.

Kisri by Moira Rogers - a short read, but fun. And hawt. And yes I am always spruiking the MR books, but they never fail to entertain me, whether I am deep in the land of reading funk or what, they never fail to make me smile and inhale the story.

I read another two Dakota Cassidy books, Accidentally Demonic, I think fell victim to my reading funk, and despite it having all the elements of Cassidy's work that i enjoy, it just didn't grab me. But My Way to Hell did grab me.

Chicks Kick Butt... well I am mostly finished it. Only one or two stories to go. But what I want to know is, what is it with anthologies lately? Are they now nothing but an advertising junket for ongoing series? The majority of these stories are part of larger ongoing series, ones I don't read. :( Which left me a bit in the dark on some of the stories, as I think the authors assumed that the reader would have some basic ideas of the world in which the story takes place.
That said though, it was mostly a reasonably entertaining read, even though part of me was crying bring back the standalone novella! throughout... My favourite stories were by Rachel Vincent and Elizabeth Vaughn, my least favourite, the Cheyenne McCray. (Though to be fair the first full novel of that series was a big DNF for me)

SIDE NOTE: What is it with authors not having full book information on their websites? I went to Vincent's site after reading her short to get more information on upcoming books, as I remembered how much I enjoyed her work, and all she has is book covers which link straight to Amazon, which is really not a great place for book detail. Apparently there is a new series coming out, but I couldn't find information about it on the site, though there was a book pic linked to Amazon, and again with no blooming info on A. - I deleted a rant about A poor book info site, are you proud Jen?? -
So she has lost some sales from this reader, though before you label me a totally cranky pants reader, which I am, I did also tweet her and asked about a blurb and got no response there either, so dollars stay in the pocket.

And those few are pretty much the only books I have finished this month. :(
Though things are looking up I am currently reading two books when I can find a spare moment:
An e-arc of Roil by Trent Jamieson from Angry Robot Books, this is a steampunk fantasy book. Jamieson is an Australian author, and one thing he can do extremely well is world-building, he has MAD SKILLS at this, and I am completely enamoured of the world he is building in this book... I just wish I could say the same of the characters, but I am in the early half of the book, so this may change.

The second e-arc is Firestorm by Radclyffe, this is a Lesbian contemporary romance. Contemporary is a bit outside my comfort zone, but Radclyffe is on my trusted author list, who has made me enjoy contemporaries before, so I haven't hesitated to start this. And within the first chapter she has me totally absorbed and wanting to find out all I can about the main characters.

So that is my month so far... I hope everyone else is having a much better time of reading than me this month!
- Please feel free to list some of your highlights for the month... I am extremely nosy about what everyone else is reading, it is always an interesting way to find new books/authors that I may have missed.

Question number two & three: Do you ever have reading funks? And do you have any tricks for getting out of them?

Non romance book covers also entertain me

Am currently working through a massive pile of last week's haul for the ebay shop, and some of the covers... and titles are entertaining me and offending me.

We have this Piers Anthony title:

The Colour of her Panties??? FFS
And what is with that mermaid - is she anorexic??

Then for covers we have the 'delightful' Flashman books by George MacDonald Fraser

and again

Heh.

Self control? I don't have it

I went on a book hunt today with the lovely Jill of Romance Direct, which we do every now and then, it's always fun to hunt for books, compete for books and talk books as we spend the entire day on the road, in and out of shops.
Now these jaunts are always good for a reasonable haul of books, as we hit a lot of different shops, in a wide range of suburbs..
But today, today, I think I broke any book buying record I ever held before this one.. and there have been a few records.. ;)
I give you the haul:

There is another box underneath the box at the back, as well as one that I didn't get in range for the photo of shame.
I am quite uncertain as to whether I should be impressed with my haul, scared of the amount of moola handed over.. or be seeking help from some bookshopping anonymous..
*shakes head*

Of course now all the books need to be cleaned and sorted, then photographed and listed.. mmm..
Maybe I should just go read?

Competition Time!

I have decided to share my love of favourite authors around and hold a competition for both Australian romance readers and international ones over the coming month.
The first author up is Moira Rogers who I am a major squeeling fan of! I adore their characters, (Mac and Zola for the win!) the interesting worlds they have built up (Southern Arcana!) and their action packed stories of awesome.

The bio from the Moira Rogers website:
How do you make a Moira Rogers? Take a former forensic science and nursing student obsessed with paranormal romance and add a computer programmer with a passion for gritty urban fantasy. Toss in a dash of whimsy and a lot of caffeine, and enjoy with a side of chocolate by the light of the full moon.
By day, Bree and Donna are mild-mannered ladies who reside in the Deep South. At night, when their husbands and children are asleep, they combine forces to unleash the product of their fevered imaginations upon the page. To learn more about this romance writing, crime fighting duo, visit their webpage at http://www.moirarogers.com. (Disclaimer: crime fighting abilities may appear only in the aforementioned fevered imaginations.)
Their entertaining blog is here: http://moirarogers.com/blog/

They have several series on the run (one advantage to being a writing duo?) http://www.moirarogers.com/digital-by-series

Competition nitty gritty:
Australian entrants the prize is your choice of one of these print Moira Rogers books:
Sanctuary
Sanctuary Redeemed
Last Hope
Crux
Crossroads

Included with book will be promo goodies supplied by the awesome Bree of some bookmarks and signed bookplate thingies.

International entrants, you have your choice of an ebook from their Samhain Publishing backlist here:
Moira Rogers Samhain
Though I would also be happy to send on some of the promo material if you like.

All you need to do to enter is leave a comment below by Monday 6th of June, and just leave your twitter ID or a facebook ID so it is easy for me to contact the winner.

Reading in May

I have been catching up on my reading lately, I have been on a Marie Harte glom, fun raunchy paranormals, including the Circe's Recruits series.

Accidentally Catty by Dakota Cassidy had me roaring with laughter, Nina will forever be in my top ten of fave characters – and this is not even her book! Dakota writes awesome women of all ages, and writes them with style. And did I mention she had me roaring out loud for most of the book? My assistant was ready to call the men in white coats on me.

Dark Slayer by Christine Feehan was another recent read, now I must admit that Feehan hasn't been my thing for a long time, but apart from the length (this book just never seemed to end) I actually enjoyed this one. After the first couple of Carpathian books it seemed like Feehan had boxed herself in with the strict rules of the world, not leaving her much scope to change up things book to book.. but I think she did well in bending and expanding the rules with this one, and giving the reader a very interesting heroine.

Never Again by Michele Bardsley was another read this month, it the first book in a new series featuring wizards and dragons WIN! Now while this was an interesting read, it is a bit of a problematic one, Bardsley spends too much time setting up the world, the romance seems to take back seat to setting things up. I know it is a first book in a new series.. but.. That said though, it is an interesting world, and I will be giving book two a shot.

Sherrilyn Kenyon, while she will forever remain a fave author, I have been avoiding her latest releases.. Anyone noticed the hating on women in her books? Especially the futuristic series?? It is always the chick doing the dumb betraying.. the OTT evil women chars.. while the heroes are all tortured perfection? Almost Mary Sues??
Sorry got a bit sidetracked, anyways, I finally picked up No Mercy and this one managed to press no buttons, but was instead a quick fun read, with laughter. I do soo love it when Kenyon gets her humour on.

And now I am looking for the next lot of reads.. it would have helped if I hadn't lost my darn wish list. *head desk*

Spruiking the latest work of Moriah Jovan..

Which is still not out yet.. and that which I have been waiting on FOREVER! The blasted tease.
But she is having a contest for the LOONNNNNNNNGGGGGGG awaited release of Magdalene here.

So this is a double up, an entry into her competition, (cos quite frankly I'm quite desperate to read Magdalene! Did I mention I've been waiting FOREVER) and a chance to push her books somewhere else apart from twitter. Cos this is a self-pubber who writes awesomesauce books, so go READ HER BOOKS!

This is the cover:

Ain't it purty??

Blurb/excerpt thingy:
"I didn’t go into prostitution because I was desperate; I did it because I was bored: Bored with my hausfrau existence, bored with my husband both in bed and out, bored with my ingrate daughters who don’t (yet) understand what it means to be the sacrificial lamb in the nuclear family setup and that being a wife and mother can be its own category of prostitution. They will. And I’ll laugh.

I was never the stereotypical whore with a heart of gold, which seems to be used as point and counterpoint: If you’re pure in heart, being a whore is tolerable, forgivable even; if you’re just a mercenary bitch who likes sex and, moreover, getting paid for it, it’s the unforgivable sin. Ultimately, however, I had to choose my clients on their ability to pay my exorbitant prices and leave the good sex to my carefully selected lovers.

I didn’t quit prostitution for some sort of wish fulfillment of born-again virginity; I quit because I was bored. Fucking for money involves a certain amount of acting ability and while I’m a very good actress (thus, a very good whore), it takes some amount of concentration that is not usually conducive to having a real orgasm.

With a healthy bank account, one ex-husband whose current partner sports genitalia similar to his, four grown daughters, my forty-third birthday on the horizon, and with professional ennui setting in, I had to find something else to do."

They have used the same model for those three guys haven't they?
It a bit creepy..

The slack blogger pops her head up briefly

Oh I has been bad!

But to be fair to myself, it has been a busy month or so, I have moved house - including a freakish large amount of books, despite the storage unit not moving. *headdesk*
And I just got back from the Australian Romance Readers Association convention in Sydney!
OMG So much fun, met a lot of the romance bloggers/twitterers, including some lovely authors. (Lexxie Couper and Cindy Gerard for the WIN!) I even managed to stutter at Nalini Singh, I think I may have been semi-incoherent but I think she got the fact that I love her books. LOL

I should really do a full run down on the awesomeness of the weekend, but I managed to bring back a car load of books from Sydney and all the stops along the way, and I need to get them up. (EEEEEEEKKKKKKKK)

Though I just wanted to do a shout out to the Australian Romance Readers Association for doing an awesome job, and to recommend any Aussie romance lovers who are not part of the association - what on earth is holding you back???

I have hit a couple of milestones..

I have reached 5900 books on the website, so I just had to put a special on there, ten percent off all books.
In the last couple of weeks a large amount of romantic suspense, paranormal and historical romance have been plonked up there.

Secondly, despite my plodding, I finally managed to get 700 up on ebay, shock horror! So I have stuck up a percentage off there as well. While there are some romance doubles there, some new romances, there is also a mix of mysteries, general fiction and even a couple of kids books up there.

So that is 6600 books I have listed for sale on the interwebs... and people wonder why I have a storage unit. heh

A lightning visit from a crappy blogger - with book reccs!

I am currently on a reading binge, after a rather horrendous couple of weeks, I am sure I will be back to my regular sporadic blogging soon.

But thought I would pop back in quickly with some reccs, if ebooks are your thing (though some are now in print) I have to highly recommend Moira Rogers Southern Arcana series from Samhain. Characters that rock a readers socks, get you all involved and caring, then brilliant action that has your heart in your throat. And the odd clue to future books which get you thinking.
Ava Gray's Skin series, they are action suspense, and unlike any other romance out there IMO, and they rock my socks.
Angela Knight, I was a fan girl of hers several years ago, but for some reason she had slipped off my radar since. WHY??????? She is awesome! I just read Master of Smoke and Master of Fire in the Mageverse series, and they rocked! Awesome heroines, some humour, some heat and action! WOOT! I am now cursing myself for picking these books up at this time, as it is going to be a long wait for Belle's book. *WAILS*

Listing books can be time consuming

You know it can be funny (not) how long it takes to list some books, it can be kind of never ending sometimes, the little things with the website, sorting through five folders of photos to find you had overlooked it in the first folder. (There are 100s of photos in each folder) Finding blurbs, or typing them out, trying to describe the faults as honestly as possible, a million things that take up time, and sometimes it is even the simple things like trying to figure out which category a book fits in.
For example today the fun and games was trying to figure out whether Lynn Viehl's awesome Darkyn series fits more under urban fantasy than paranormal romance? It has the paranormal romance elements, but it definitely more gritty, like UF, but it has the HEA, but the plot strands are focused on a little more than the romance unlike normal PR... And are straight rom readers going to be put off by the UF elements if they buy it thinking it a straight PR???
ARGH!!
Book selling can be a fun thing.. uh huh.
